One of the points that is repeatedly emphasized in our organization is the importance of having organized janitorial closets. Not only does it increase the productivity of our employees, but it also saves us money on inventory and injury prevention. Below are a few reasons why you should maintain an organized and presentable janitorial closet.

  • Presentation

Our janitorial closets are a direct reflection of our performance. If we have dirty closets, it is safe to assume that the cleaning is also sub par. For this reason, we inspect our closets and make sure that, not only are they presentable, but well organized too. This also helps our clients when it comes to inspections and accreditation.

Additionally, an organized closet shows that we care. It demonstrates initiative and the desire to perform our duties well.

  • Safety

One of the most important reasons for having a well-organized closet is safety. Preventing falling objects can cut down on inventory loss, possible injuries and chemical spills. It is a high priority that we keep our staff safe and avoid cross contamination that could be harmful to both the employees and our clients.

Organization of the closet also includes routine checks of janitorial supplies. Ensuring that all of our vacuums, mops, buckets, etc. are in good working condition keeps our employees productive and safe. The regular maintenance of our equipment has saved us copious amounts of money by preventing the amount of replacements we purchase, and damage that may be caused by using faulty equipment.

  • Accessibility

More often than not, we find when accounts consistently have organized janitorial closets they can more accurately control inventory. When our employees can see all of the supplies, they can be more precise when placing inventory orders and avoid over ordering.

Having proper access to all of the supplies also makes our employees more efficient. They are able to quickly pick out what is needed and return to their duties. There is nothing more annoying and wasteful as being unable to find a product or tool in a closet. The objective is to maintain an organizational structure in the closets that is consistent and easy to upkeep. It should be just as easy to take products and equipment, as is it to restock.

These three points are ones that we have learned over our 26 years of experience. They are simple, but nonetheless important. The janitorial closet is the equivalent of our “office” and as such should remain presentable and productive. If the janitorial closets are well-maintained and organized, it is more likely that we will be more productive, safer, less stressed and less likely to make mistakes.

So, when was the last time you checked out your janitorial closet?
